How to Care for Hair: Washing, Conditioner and Heat Protection

Well-cared-for hair depends less on the number of products and more on a consistent routine that suits you. The foundation is cleansing the scalp, conditioning the lengths, detangling gently and using heated tools in moderation.

Washing frequency is individual. Base it on scalp oiliness, sweating, styling-product use and personal comfort rather than a universal schedule.

How to wash hair and use conditioner
Gently detangling the hair

Choose shampoo primarily for the condition of the scalp. Apply it at the roots and massage with the fingertips without scratching; the foam running through the lengths is usually enough to cleanse them. Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.

Conditioner reduces friction and makes detangling easier. It is usually distributed from mid-length to ends, while products made specifically for the scalp should be used according to their directions. Conditioner itself does not cause hair loss.

Masks and safe detangling

A mask can temporarily soften dry or damaged lengths and reduce tangling, but it is not required with every wash and cannot permanently repair hair. Use it at the frequency stated by the manufacturer and rinse thoroughly.

Wet hair stretches and is damaged more easily. Blot it gently with a towel instead of rubbing, then detangle from the ends toward the roots with a wide-tooth comb or suitable brush.

Drying, heat protection and oils

Hair dryers and heated tools do not have to be eliminated completely. Use moderate heat, keep the dryer at a distance and do not hold a straightener or curling tool on one section. Distribute heat protectant evenly before hot styling.

A small amount of oil can add smoothness and shine to dry ends, but it cannot permanently mend damage. Apply ordinary oils to the scalp only when well tolerated and specifically intended for that area. Seek dermatological advice for persistent itching, flaking or noticeable hair loss.
